Bill 203
Keeping Primary Care Fair Act

  • The Bill amends the Commitment to the Future of Medicare Act, 2004.
  • The amendments prohibit nurse practitioners from accepting certain payments or benefits for providing services to an insured person that would normally be provided as insured services in specified settings. Payments or benefits for these services may still be accepted from specified public sources or in accordance with the regulations.
  • The penalties for contraventions of the Act are increased.
  • A new regulation-making power permits regulations providing for and governing reimbursements of payments or benefits made for these services within six months after the day this Act receives Royal Assent.

Bill 72
Health Professionals Week Act

  • On March 2nd, 2023, MPP Shamji introduced Bill 72, Health Professionals Week Act, 2023.
  • This bill would proclaim the third week of June as a week to honour and recognize the contributions of the more than 250 different kinds of health professionals who keep our healthcare system running.
  • While celebrating these workers, it would also expose young people to these rewarding careers.

Bill 175
Building Universal and Inclusive Land Development in Ontario Act

  • The Bill amends the Planning Act with respect to official plans and by-laws.
  • The amendments state that official plans and zoning by-laws may not have the effect of prohibiting the use of four or fewer residential units on specified parcels of urban residential land.
  • They also may not impose a floor-to-area ratio on residential buildings or residential structures that contain three to six residential units, may not prohibit residential buildings or residential structures from being four or fewer storeys in height and may not require parking spaces to be provided in connection with residential buildings or residential structures that contain at least four residential units.

Bill 10
Publication of Mandate Letters Act

  • On August 22nd, 2022, just two and a half months after being elected, MPP Shamji introduced Bill 10, Publication of Mandate Letters Act, 2022.
  • This legislation would require the Premier of Ontario to publish their mandate letters, which are essentially a Premier’s marching orders to their Cabinet.
  • The goal is to create a political environment of transparency and accountability in Ontario.

Bill 67
Temporary Nursing Agency
Licensing and Regulation Act

  • On February 23rd, 2023, MPP Shamji introduced Bill 67, Temporary Nursing Agency Licensing and Regulation Act, 2023.
  • The goal of this legislation was to create a licensing body, licensing requirements, and regulations that would hold temporary staffing agencies in healthcare to a higher standard. My bill would have prevented agencies from using predatory practices to hold our healthcare system financially hostage and diminish worker morale.
